Maria

“Maria now sees herself doing things that she couldn’t do before… it’s priceless.” – Jessica (Maria’s mom)

8 year old Maria has a unique form of cerebral palsy that prevents her from participating in everyday fitness activities. Maria’s mom, Jessica, learned about the Y’s Adaptive Fitness program and thought it would be perfect for her little girl. The program is designed for Y members with diverse abilities and offers adaptive fitness equipment, while fostering an inclusive environment for our entire community.

“The program is good for Maria’s socialization” says physical therapist, Tracy Stoner. “She gets the benefit of seeing other kids, unlike in a PT clinic where it may be more isolated.” The long-term goal was for Jessica to bring Maria to the Y and have the ability to exercise as a family. She’s achieved that goal, all while witnessing her daughter’s incredible progress. “Maria now sees herself doing things that she couldn’t do before… it’s priceless.”
