YMCA Global Teens Program is designed to develop international understanding and leadership skills while providing service-learning opportunities for youth.
Wilmington, Delaware – The YMCA of Delaware is thrilled to announce its 2024 Global Teens Trip to Kenya, a transformative two-week abroad opportunity for local youth. In partnership with New Castle County, this program aims to provide high school students ages 14-18 with a unique and enriching experience.
The journey will begin with participants departing from the Walnut Street YMCA. They will fly out of New York on July 18th and arrive on July 19th in Nairobi, Kenya, for a 10-day stay. The contingent will return to the Walnut Street YMCA on July 29th.
This service collaboration with the Nairobi YMCA will provide 20 students and 14 adult chaperones with an immersive cultural and educational experience. The YMCA Global Teens Program is designed to develop international understanding, leadership skills, and cultural competency, as well as provide service-learning opportunities for young people. It promotes civic engagement and a deeper understanding of social issues on both a local and global scale to prepare young people to lead in the 21st century.
“We are deeply grateful for the support of our sponsors and partners who have made this opportunity possible for future leaders in our state,” said Jesus De Las Salas, Vice President of Social Responsibility and Corporate Partnerships at the YMCA of Delaware. “Our mission is to ensure every youth and teen we serve is on a pathway to success. This program allows us to provide Delaware teens, many of whom are from high-poverty areas, with valuable life skills to enrich their personal and academic growth while preparing them for a more interconnected and diverse world.”
During their stay in Kenya, students will engage in service learning, mental health forums with young people from the Nairobi YMCA, and numerous cultural experiences with local tribes. The itinerary includes visits to Nairobi, Maasai Mara National Reserve, the YMCA National Training Institute, and Mass at St. Stephen’s Cathedral Church. Participants will take part in several educational activities such as learning about Kenyan culture, exploring local wildlife, and participating in community service activities.
In addition, Y staff and students will travel with six suitcases filled with clothing and essentials to donate to local families in Kenya.
