Dwight Clayton: A Guiding Light at the Central YMCA
As the Resident Peer Specialist at the Central YMCA, Dwight Clayton is critical in helping residents find their way toward a healthier, more stable lifestyle. With a history deeply connected to the Y, Dwight is a living testament to the life-changing impact of the YMCA’s programs.
Fifteen years ago, Dwight was a resident at the Central YMCA, battling a life of addiction that began after his father left him as a child. He describes his past as “unimaginable,” filled with hardship, bad decisions, and deep struggles. At the Central Y, he found mentorship, guidance, and, most importantly, belief in himself. Now celebrating 16 years of sobriety, Dwight uses his story to inspire others: “If this can work for an addict like me, then maybe it can work for an addict like you.”
Dwight connects with residents personally by fellowshipping over meals, listening when they feel unheard, and advocating for those who can’t advocate for themselves. Drawing from his own experiences, Dwight offers hope to individuals struggling with addiction, showing them that “there’s a way out” and that they don’t have to repeat the same destructive cycles.
His work at the Y is about more than shelter and meals—it’s about providing a hand up to those who feel lost. “We all need a hand up,” Dwight says, “because so many people have fallen between the cracks. If we don’t reach back, they may not find their way out.” For Dwight, the YMCA represents opportunity, integrity, and community. He encourages residents to become willing participants in their own transformation, knowing firsthand that the YMCA can change lives for those ready to accept help.
“I live with integrity now, and these guys see me living it,” Dwight shares. His work ensures the YMCA continues its legacy of helping countless individuals live better, healthier lives.
