Diabetes Awareness Month

Did you know that of the 98 million Americans with prediabetes, over 8 in 10 adults don’t know they have it? This November, the YMCA of Delaware encourages Delaware residents to assess their risk for prediabetes and type 2 diabetes—and to take proactive steps toward prevention.

Lifestyle Tips for Diabetes Prevention:

  1. Talk to Your Doctor
Use this month as a reminder to discuss your diabetes risk factors with your healthcare provider—especially if you have a family history of diabetes or are overweight.
  2. Add More Fruits and Veggies
Aim to include more colorful fruits and vegetables in your meals! Seasonal fall produce offers a range of flavors and nutrients—get creative with healthy recipes that can boost your overall health.
  3. Choose Lean Proteins
Making simple dietary changes, such as opting for fish, lean meats, and skinless poultry, can help with weight loss and reduce diabetes risk. Check out healthy recipes at diabetes.org.
  4. Prioritize Whole Grains
Whole grains provide lasting energy and fullness. Try a whole grain sandwich packed with fresh veggies and lean protein for a balanced, satisfying meal.
  5. Move 150 Minutes Weekly
Aim for 150 minutes of physical activity each week. Start with a short daily walk or explore our YMCA’s group fitness classes to make movement a fun part of your routine.
  6. Drink More Water
Staying hydrated by choosing water over sugary drinks can support weight loss and reduce diabetes risk. Carry a reusable water bottle to make staying hydrated easier.
