Wilmington, Delaware – The YMCA of Delaware is excited to introduce its new Blood Pressure Self-Monitoring program, designed to empower individuals to take control of their heart health and reduce their risk of hypertension-related complications. The program is currently available at the Bear-Glasgow Family YMCA, with virtual options available. Plans are already underway to expand to additional YMCA locations across Delaware in the coming months.
Addressing Delaware’s Hypertension Crisis
Hypertension remains a major public health concern in Delaware, affecting 36% of residents, while 6.6% of Delawareans suffer from heart disease—the second leading cause of death in the state. To combat these alarming statistics, the YMCA’s Blood Pressure Self-Monitoring Program provides participants with the tools, education, and support needed to track their blood pressure, develop healthier habits, and improve overall cardiovascular health.
“At the Y, we are committed to strengthening community health and empowering individuals to take control of their well-being,” said Amy Desmond, Director of Community Health at the YMCA of Delaware. “This program provides a simple yet powerful way for people to monitor their blood pressure and make meaningful lifestyle changes that can help prevent heart disease and stroke.”
Community Support
The YMCA of Delaware is grateful to the American Heart Association for its generous donation of 50 blood pressure monitoring devices and a self-monitoring kiosk, which will be available at the Bear-Glasgow Family YMCA. These resources will enhance accessibility and encourage those at risk to participate actively in their health management.
“Knowing your numbers is key to preventing heart disease and stroke,” said Yinka Ischei, Community Impact Manager at the American Heart Association. “By making blood pressure monitoring more accessible, we hope to empower more people to take control of their heart health and make informed decisions.”
The self-monitoring kiosk will be unveiled at the Bear-Glasgow Family Y on April 8th at 10:30 a.m.
Furthermore, the Delaware Department of Health and Social Services (DHSS) has committed financial support and grant funding to expand the program to additional YMCA locations over the next 6-12 months. This vital contribution will allow more Delawareans to benefit from this life-changing initiative.
“Blood pressure self-monitoring programs empower individuals to take control of their health, providing them with the tools to track their progress, make informed decisions, and work with their healthcare providers to prevent complications,” says Shebra Hall, Chief, Bureau of Chronic Disease, Division of Public Health at DHSS. “It is an important step toward improving cardiovascular health and reducing health disparities.”
How the Program Works

✔️ Gain nutrition education to support better blood pressure management.
✔️ Identify lifestyle triggers that contribute to high blood pressure.
