Meet The Author Event To Explore Walnut Street YMCA History

DR. JEANNE NUTTER EXPLORES HISTORY OF WALNUT ST. YMCA
AWARD-WINNING ORAL HISTORIAN TO DISCUSS NEW BOOK AT MEET THE AUTHOR EVENT
WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 18TH – WALNUT STREET YMCA

Wilmington, Delaware – The YMCA of Delaware invites the community to a special “Meet the Author” event with Dr. Jeanne Nutter on Wednesday, September 18th, at the historic Walnut Street YMCA. This exclusive event will take place ahead of the much-anticipated release of Dr. Nutter’s new book “Images of America: Walnut St. YMCA & YWCA”, which delves into the rich and inspiring history of the Walnut Street YMCA, a cornerstone of Wilmington’s community.

Dr. Jeanne Nutter, a respected historian and author, has dedicated years to highlighting the impact of African Americans on the local community, the broader civil rights movement, and the ongoing commitment to social justice. Her forthcoming book explores the stories and milestones that have shaped Wilmington and the Walnut Street YMCA’s legacy.

“During the 1940’s, 1950’s and 1960’s, because of segregation, there were no facilities for African Americans in Wilmington and the surrounding communities except the schools and churches,” Dr. Nutter said. “The Walnut Street YMCA and YWCA, therefore, became the center of African American culture, providing social, cultural, educational, and athletic activities for both children and adults. It was the ‘heartbeat’ of the African American community and a center of Black excellence. Fond memories of the Walnut Street Y are still held in the hearts of many.”
